Durham University Masterplan

We prepared this masterplan or development framework for all of the Durham University sites, including the Queen’s campus at Stockton on Tees which is 18 miles from the main Durham campus.

The plan illustrates a potential doubling of accommodation which will allow the University to expand in the future as it wishes in accordance with its prevailing objectives and academic plan.

The plan’s main organising principles are the creation of linkages between sites; the consolidation of development to create ‘critical mass’ on each of the main sites thereby reducing travel times and avoiding sprawl; and the reinforcement of landscape structure, building on the special qualities of the University’s unique setting and the context of Durham.

The process of evolving the plan included consultation with the planning authority and other stakeholders.

The Development Framework was approved by University Council in May 2006, and we continued to work with the University on the detailed implementation of the first phases.

The masterplan report can be viewed on the University's website here.
