This project for The Learning Trust in Hackney was designed to enable the school and the local education authority to develop the brief, understand the scope and constraints of the project and to inform the selection of the contractor, who was then selected, with their designers, from the Academies Framework. The extension creates additional space for a Sixth Form of 250 pupils.
The scheme is in a complex setting, facing an adjacent park, between two railway lines, and extending a building originally designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership, with whom we liaised in preparing this scheme. The building seeks to create flexible multi-purpose space which can be integrated with the school but at the same time form a Sixth Form community with a separate identity. The form of the building draws on a similar strategy to the existing building, extending the blue wall facing the railway, with a more transparent, animated side facing the playground.
